Resident Evil 2026 is finally in theaters: are you ready to return to Raccoon City? The new film comes from Zach Cregger, director of Barbarian and Weapons, and it hit US theaters on September 18, 2026, one day after its Italian debut. This time, however, it’s not just another adaptation. Cregger built a movie you watch the way you play a chapter of the Capcom saga, with close-up framing, scarce resources and doors to unlock. Meanwhile, the series’ most beloved survival horror chapters are waiting for you on IndieGala, on sale.

In-Depth: Resident Evil 2026

The hero is Bryan, played by Austin Abrams, a medical courier who carries organs from one hospital to another. One winter night, he accepts an urgent delivery to the hospital in Raccoon City, while a blizzard rages outside. Then, on the empty road, his car hits a woman. Something about her, however, isn’t right. From that moment on, the trip becomes the worst night of his life. Bryan isn’t a cop or a soldier: he’s an ordinary guy, thrown into an infection outbreak with no weapons, no training and no way out. This very fragility makes his fight for survival so tense.

Alongside Abrams, you’ll find Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Paul Walter Hauser, while the script comes from Cregger and Shay Hatten, who also penned John Wick: Chapter 3 and Chapter 4. The story unfolds on the edges of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3. However, you won’t see Leon, Jill or Claire: the director explained that their stories are already told in the games. Moreover, the film doesn’t continue the Milla Jovovich saga or the 2021 reboot. It’s a fresh start, with a single protagonist at its center. As a result, every choice Bryan makes feels like a player’s choice in front of the screen.

A Film That Plays Like a Game

The real strength of Resident Evil 2026 lies in its direction. Cregger doesn’t just reference the games: he translates the feeling of playing them into film language. For most of the movie, the camera stays glued to Bryan’s shoulders, like the over-the-shoulder camera of the modern remakes. Then, in key moments, it switches to a first-person view. It happens when Bryan carefully clears a room, or when he inspects a newly found weapon. Some shots even frame the gun sight in the foreground, in a direct nod to Resident Evil 7 and the most recent chapters. As a result, you stop watching and start feeling inside the game.

The way environments are built also follows gaming logic. A single light shines on an isolated farmhouse in the dark, and you immediately know you’ll have to go in. Later, Bryan ends up in an abandoned tunnel, where an RV blocks the only exit. The camera shows only what he sees, while a noise comes from the back of the vehicle. You know you have to go there to move on, yet you never want to. It’s the same feeling as every dark corridor in the saga: the only way forward is also the scariest one.

Classic Resident Evil Elements on the Big Screen

If you’ve played the saga, you’ll instantly recognize its language of exploration and limited resources. First, the locked doors: Bryan must find specific keys, hidden in the strangest places, to open countless locks, and one of them delivers one of the film’s smartest payoffs. At the same time, he opens drawer after drawer hoping to find ammo, often with little luck. As the night goes on, though, something changes. Bryan grows more skilled and finds increasingly powerful weapons, in a true arsenal progression that peaks with the shotgun hanging over the farmhouse fireplace. That shotgun is a precise callback, too: in the original Resident Evil, an identical weapon hides a deadly trap.

Sharp-eyed viewers will then spot the series’ signature items. First Aid Spray cans appear in the barn, while a van full of Green Herbs sits in the tunnel, the very tools that heal you and keep you alive in the games. Finally, in the middle of a quiet farmhouse room, Bryan finds a typewriter. In the film, it almost feels creepy. However, fans know that in the games it marks the safe room, where you save your progress with an ink ribbon. Even the opening crash is a tribute, since Resident Evil 2 also begins with a crash at the city’s gates.

Above all of this loom the monsters. The film introduces new infected creatures, grotesque and unpredictable, which Bryan faces with the few means at hand. The pacing alternates slow exploration, rising tension and sudden bursts of violence. In other words, Cregger brings pure survival horror to the big screen, built on helplessness, puzzles and fear of what hides behind the next door.

Origins

It all started in 1996, when Capcom released Resident Evil on PlayStation. In Japan, the game is called Biohazard and, since then, the saga has defined an entire genre. Therefore, in 2026 the franchise celebrates thirty years of zombies, viruses and Umbrella conspiracies. The movies arrived in 2002 with the first film by Paul W. S. Anderson, followed by five more chapters, and then in 2021 with Welcome to Raccoon City. Now, with Cregger, the saga starts over once again, and this time it gets as close to the controller as possible.

Resident Evil Games on IndieGala
